Honoring 40 Years of ServiceMembers of Marlton Rotary joined our neighbors in Mt. Laurel in honoring Rotarian Jarry Jones for his 40 years of Service Above Self. Jarry is a six-time Paul Harris Fellow, winner of both the Mike Kitdis Award for Environmental Work and the Archie Award for Community Service, and has served as club president twice as well as serving as Assistant Governor under six different District Governors. Jarry says his "Secret to success is join early, don't quit and don't move" and he has truly lived this motto. He began his career in service to community 70 years ago at age 16, when he joined the Fellowship Fire Department and moved through the ranks of what is now the Mt. Laurel Fire District. At the same time, he joined the Grange, an organization of farmers started after the Civil War at the request of President Lincoln. Having held offices on the local, county, state and national Grange levels, he currently holds the office of Master (President) of Moorestown Grange #8. As a member of the County Green Acres and Mt. Laurel Green Acres boards, he was involved in the design and construction of the Laurel Acres Park where he mowed the first soccer fields and coached Greentree Soccer for 13 years. In 2004, Jarry took on the project of renovating the historic Alice Paul House, organizing Boy Scout Troop 76 to tackle the landscape clean up. There doesn't seem to be an aspect of life in Mount Laurel that Jarry hasn't touched! A lifetime member of Moorestown and Mt. Laurel Quaker Meeting houses, Jarry has taught Sunday school, led the Teenage Youth Group, and served on many committees including the property committee which was involved with the renovation of the historic Mt. Laurel Meeting House (built in 1760). A local historian, Jarry is a great resource, a good friend and a fantastic Rotarian. We congratulate him on this well deserved recognition!

Gift of Life PresentationKathy Hiltner recently made a presentation to our club about our District's Gift of Life Foundation. The Foundation provides free medical services to children with heart defects in third world countries. Without our help, most of these children will die, as there are no facilities to correct even basic heart conditions. The foundation sends doctors to countries such as the Philippines and San Salvador to perform surgeries, set up clinics, and train doctors.
Their only fundraiser is the "Spring Fling Gala," a dinner dance at Merion Caterers on March 22nd. Click here for more information.
Thanks to Kathy for the inspiring speech!

Author Jo D'Antonio, Guest SpeakerGuest speaker, Josephine M. D'Antonio is an author and polio eradication advocate. Never vaccinated for polio, Josephine contracted the disease at age 4 and underwent four surgeries before age eleven to correct the debilitating effects of polio. She now lives with the after effects of the disease, known as Post-Polio Syndrome. PPS is a condition that affects polio survivors 10-40 years after the initial paralytic attack of the polio virus. After learning that polio still exists in Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Josephine became alarmed and decided to try to "help out" so that no one else would have to suffer what she had. Knowing that all it takes is one dose of the vaccine to prevent the disease, Jo declared that "one person CAN make a difference. Jo has written a children's book, The Snowbirds and the Empty Nest. She is donating the profits for her book sales to the World Health Organization for the purchase of vaccine to help eradicate Polio in Africa. Evesham Twp. School Board Recognizes Marlton Rotary
Basic education and literacy are one of Rotary's Six Areas of Focus. Our dictionary project is one of the club's favorite programs. Each year we distribute a dictionary to every third grade student in Evesham Twp. We visit with them, discuss what Rotary is and does, and take a first look at the books which will be use as a part of a teaching unit in their cirriculum. The children are always amazed by the longest word in the dictionary printed on the last page of the book. This year, we asked the students to write a letter of thanks to a member of our armed forces stationed in Afghanistan using some new words found in their dictionaries. As you can imagine, their letters were priceless!
In these photos, members of the Marlton Rotary receive awards for their donation of dictionaries to all 3rd graders. Thank you, Evesham School Board! |
